Project Brief

The Muslim Hajj is the largest single movement of human beings on the planet. For two months each year, the airport serving it has to cater for an influx of three million pilgrims on top of its usual passenger throughput.

An international ideas competition to realise the new Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz International Airport called for a flexible facility capable of providing a comfortable, efficient and high quality experience both in everyday operation and during the Hajj. The design addresses the logistical challenges unique to the Hajj whilst capturing a deep spiritual and cultural resonance.

The scheme takes its inspiration from the form of the indigenous palm, which in the desert represents water and life and so is symbolic of hope, sanctuary, hospitality and welcome.

The grand palm canopy is instantly recognizable on the approach to the airport by road or by air and is continually discernible from the spaces within the building
